Chapter 1: A Changed Outlook
We are constantly being told to-day, and rightly told, that we must “think in continents.” A narrow parochial or insular out-look is of little value; only a world-wide vision can match the world-wide needs of the present age. The world of humanity has become one, and the scale of all movements has in consequence vastly increased. This is true in almost every department of life, social, political, economic, religious. An Inter-national Labour Movement, the Reunion of Christendom, the League of Nations, the rapid Westernizing of the East, are but examples of the growing solidarity of man-kind and the essential fellowship of its component parts. “And whether one member suffereth, all the members suffer with it”; the truth of St. Paul’s teaching about the body has come home to us in painful fashion in these years of slow reconstruction after the Great War.
