Prefatory Note to the First Edition
In the year 1895, the author wrote a series of articles in The Mission World under the general title of “The Land of Fire,” giving the pathetic history of the Fuegian or Patagonian Mission, begun by Captain Alien F. Gardiner. These articles, which excited a good deal of interest at the time, form the substance of the following volume. At the request of the Committee of the South American Missionary Society, the whole has been carefully· revised, extended, brought up to date, and cast into the form of a book.
