Not only was he instrumental in founding no less than two mission societies in the United States but his superb translation of the Bible into Burmese has proved foundational to the growth of the church in Myanmar. Click to download.<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>A bibliography of works on Adoniram Judson and his wives is <a href=\"http:\/\/missiology.org.uk\/ple_j-l_judson.php\" target=\"_blank\">available on the main\u00a0<strong>Missiology.org.uk<\/strong> website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>I &#8211; Historical Introduction<\/h3>\n<h4>One Hundred Years of American Baptist Missions<\/h4>\n<p>Adoniram\u00a0and Ann Judson landed in Rangoon, July 13, 1813.\u00a0Nearly a year later, on May 21, 1814, the General Missionary\u00a0Convention was formed and, assuming the support of the Judsons\u00a0and Luther Rice, accepted Burma as the foreign mission field\u00a0of American Baptists, the English Baptists having headquarters at\u00a0Serampore near Calcutta across the Bay of Bengal. Within the next\u00a0five or six years two other missionary enterprises were undertaken cooperation\u00a0with American Negro Baptists in work on the west coast\u00a0of Africa in the region of Sierra Leone and Liberia, and work among\u00a0the American Indians in what is now the middle West. Active participation\u00a0in the work in Africa ceased about 1840, while work among\u00a0the Indians was continued until about the time of the opening of the\u00a0Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>The first twenty years of the work in Burma were marked by\u00a0the laying of foundations slowly but surely. The intense opposition\u00a0of the Burman Government prevented large expansion. By the year\u00a01833, however, three important centers-Rangoon, Moulmein, and Tavoy,\u00a0had been occupied, with several outposts at Mergui, Amherst,\u00a0and in Arrakan. The report of that year records twenty-two missionaries\u00a0and 371 church-members.<\/p>\n<p>The period of four or five years, beginning with 1833, marked a\u00a0distinct era in Baptist foreign missionary work. A strong missionary\u00a0interest prevailed among the churches.
